Sesame chicken is one of my favorite
Chinese American-Chinese foods. And since my family isn’t the “let’s-go-eat-out” kind of family, I decided I needed to try my hand at making this delicious “delicacy”. I searched the Internet for a do-able recipe and finally found this one from My Kitchen Snippets . After flipping through Chinese Cooking: A Collection of Easy & Elegant Recipes, I gathered some ideas and decided to make stir-fried vegetables; how hard could it be? (Hard enough that I had to run and get my dad, the cook of the house, for help while the oil heating up in the pan almost started a fire).
Just a quick note on the recipes: I served white rice with the sesame chicken and vegetables, but noodles would taste delicious too! This is a great recipe to improvise with, especially since many vegetables could have been tossed into the stir-fry.
Ingredients for Sesame Chicken:
- chicken breasts (about 1.5 lb), cut into bite size pieces
- 4 1/2 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- salt and pepper (to taste)
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp rice flour
- 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
- 1 tsp honey
- 1/4 cup water
- sesame seeds
Pour the sesame oil, 1 1/2 tbsp of the soy sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper in a large plastic Ziploc bag. Add the chicken and marinate for about an hour.
Before frying the chicken, add the flours to the Ziploc bag and, after tightly sealing the bag, mix. To fry the chicken, first heat sesame oil in a pan. Once the oil is ready, fry the chicken. Afterwards, put the chicken in a bowl and pour the tomato ketchup, honey, the rest of the soy sauce, and water into the pan and bring to a boil. When the sauce has thickened, add the chicken back into the pan and mix it into the sauce. Add sesame seeds and serve hot.
Ingredients for Vegetable Stir-fry:
- sesame oil
- 2 broccoli heads (not stems), chopped accordingly
- 2 carrots, cut into thin circles
- 1-2 onions, coarsely chopped
- 1-2 peppers, cut into long and thin slices
- 1 clove of garlic, minced
- 5-7 mushrooms, finely sliced
- 1/4 cup Teriyaki Sauce
- 1/4 cup Stir-Fry Sauce
- 1/3 cup soy sauce
- sesame seeds
Heat sesame oil in a large, deep pan. Add the broccoli and carrots and stir-fry for about 2 minutes. Then add the peppers and stir-fry for about a minute before adding the onions and mushrooms. Pour the Teriyaki Sauce, Stir-Fry Sauce, and half of the soy sauce onto the vegetables, stirring continually. Next add the garlic, sesame seeds, and the rest of the soy sauce; stir-fry for about two more minutes before serving.
